International Women’s Day!
While we all know that March 8 is globally celebrated as International Women’s Day, a lot of people, especially men and a few women, have no idea why this day is celebrated and what is the significance.
To keep it short and simple, you must know that International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe to commemorate the day as an achievement for the women of the world. This day is observed to bring to light the massive change and milestone that women achieved in the twentieth century in terms of getting their rights to cast a vote.
Apart from this, the day is also observed to bring to light the injustices that women have faced and continue to face on a daily basis. Some of these issues are gender inequality, domestic violence. pay gap, assault and harassment, reproductive rights, and so on.
Every year, the theme of the International women’s Day campaign changes. For example, Choose To Challenge was the theme of International Women’s Day 2021. And it changed again in the year 2022 with the new theme Break The Bias.
However, this is a new year and we have a new theme.

Break The Bias To Embrace Equity: What You Should Know!
Times change and so should we. so should our goals. With continued effort, it is possible that we will be able to achieve what we are trying to or dreaming of. And that is the reason why the theme of International Women’s Day also changes from year to year.
The theme for IWD for the year 2022 was Break The Bias. And This focused on breaking the stereotypes and gender biases that women face in every section of their lives.
The Theme for 2023 Internal Women’s Day campaign is Embrace Equity. And this is yet another step forward towards achieving the same goal.

Break The Bias: IWD Theme 2022
Even though we think that we have come a long way, women are still considered to be the weaker sex. And that is the reason why there are still so many biases that continue to exist even in today’s time in most societies.
That is the reason why the IWD theme of 2022 was #BreakTheBias.
The UN Women also spoke extensively about how important it is to break the gender bias that holds us down as a society. The aim of 2022 Internal Women’s Day was simple: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
It is important to notice and recognize the contribution of women in every sector of the world. It is crucial to accelerate equality and move forward for a better and sustainable development of the future.
Even when it comes to workplaces, there is one thing that women have faced on a regular basis. And this happens to be the gender norms. Apart from the stark pay gap, there is one thing that women employees have constantly faced in their workplaces. And these happen to be the prejudices of society.
For example, a study published by Fortune, mentioned how “high-achieving” men and women were treated very differently from one another. The feedbacks for the women employees were like the following:
“Jessica is really talented”. This was followed by, “But I wish she’d be less abrasive. She comes on too strong.”
On the other hand, when giving feedback about the male counterparts, it was said, “Steve is an easy case…Smart and great to work with. He needs to learn to be a little more patient, but who doesn’t?”
Studies have also found that nearly 23% of working mothers who were
“balancing work and parenting responsibilities” have been “passed over for a promotion for this reason.”
This goes on to prove how differently women employees are treated even in workplaces compared to their male counterparts.
And this is something that the 2022 Women’s Day theme wanted to break.
Embrace Equity: IWD Theme 2023
Times have changed and we have fast forwarded to another new year. That is the reason why the theme of the 2023 Women’s Day has also changed.
The new theme of the IWD campaign is #EmbraceEquity. And it is a step forward from last year’s theme. How? Well, let me explain!
#EmbraceEquity or Embrace Equity is the new theme that has a simple goal— to achieve equity.
While gender equality is a far-fetched idea, because women and men are different from each other physiologically and biologically, gender equity is achievable.
According to International Women’s Day, the
“aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren’t enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.”
In order to truly understand the theme of IWD 2023, it is important that you understand the meanings of the two words ‘Equity’ and ‘Equality’ and how they are different from one another.
While Equality means that individuals are given equal rights and status, this is more of a Utopian idea or concept. Men and women are not equal. And that is the reason why it is important that we focus on Equity.
Equity, on the other hand, is the quality of life where people enjoy and experience fair and impartial opportunities and rights.
UN Goodwill ambassador and actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas pointed out the difference between the two words and why we need to achieve equity in one of her interviews:
“Physiologically, men and women are different. There is no debate about it. When we talk about equality and opportunity, we talk about cerebral opportunity. We are not saying we want to be able to be like a 200 pound man and beat the shit out of somebody else. We are not saying that. We’re saying you give the ability to get the job, to be the CEO and nobody should question a woman’s choices or her drive to be someone. So if she is 50, a CEO and a mother of three. do not question her.”
